Nancy's News

Please check back each month for news about San Antonio.

In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy something I wrote to commemorate the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

September 11, 2001
The day that united Americans.
The two airlines that were hijacked: United & American.

Help Our Broken Hearts To Mend

Souls Aboard the Planes

Gentle hearts were beating with excitement
For both the passengers and crew,
Hearts beating in anticipation
Of the things they were going to do.

Souls on board for many reasons,
Some for business and some for fun,
Some going to marry, some to bury,
Some returning to a loved one.

Some on board hated America
And armed themselves with knives,
Men who, in the name of religion
Forever changed everybody's lives.

Some on board chose to defend.
Others cried, they were afraid.
Some called loved ones to say goodbye
While others quietly prayed.

These hateful men did evil things
Out of desperation,
Performing unforgiveable acts of violence
Against our respected nation.

Evil ruled but it did not win.
Not then, not now, never!
God reached out and took His children home
And gave them peace forever.

Souls in the Towers

So high above the rest of us
In towers that reached the sky,
So high above the rest of us
They could hear the angels sigh.

Photos of their loved ones
Once sat upon their desks,
Photos of those now left behind
To make sense of all the mess.

With tears in His eyes God cried and said,
"This wasn't in my plans.
Come home with me. Don't be afraid."
He reached out and took their hands.

"It's too soon. It's much too soon,
For you to leave the earth.
No madman filled with hate can decide
How much your life is worth."

Thousands upon thousands they say
Is where the count of "missing" stands.
They aren't really missing after all,
They've been found - in God's gentle hands.

We have our counts of injured.
We have our counts of dead.
Don't count them as "missing" persons,
Count them as "dearly missed" instead.

Souls in the Pentagon

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, civilians,
All workers just like you and me.
They took an oath to defend and serve
This land and to keep it free.

Defending the land they loved so dear,
Just like heroes in years gone by,
Defending freedom has a high price to pay
And they knew they, too, could die.

My son also wears a uniform
And puts his life in danger,
Defending our land from madmen
Whose hearts are filled with anger.

Could anyone see this coming?
Who could do this awful deed?
We're a land of peace and hope
but now "It's war!" the papers read.

Wars are fought in other lands.
We have nothing at home to fear.
We're a nation of many cultures,
Everyone is welcomed here.

We welcome the poor and homeless
Who have nothing left but dreams.
We take them in with open arms
Where the sound of freedom rings.

God, we ask your blessings
For our nation and for all it stands.
Protect our loved ones in uniform,
Their precious lives are in your hands.

The Heroes

As the world watched in horror,
These men knew they had a job to do;
Fire and danger could not stop them,
They understood for they had loved ones, too.

Amidst the fire, the tangled mess
Were souls in desperate need;
They bravely went to help them,
They bravely did their deed.

They bravely died together,
The heroes and those they went to save
They bravely died together,
The ultimate price they gave.

The list of heroes never ends,
Brave men with so much to give;
Brave men who love enough
To risk their lives so that we may live.

God has a special place for heroes
Where they're finally safe at last.
He cares for them as they cared for us,
So lovingly in the past.

Dear God, bless them and their families,
You're surrounded by good men;
Our world has lost its heroes,
Keep them safe until we meet again.

The Rescuers

Frantic to find lives they came
Full of hope and love and more
Rescuers by the hundreds
Some with two legs, some with four.

Against insurmountable odds
They worked desperately through the hours
Dust and smoke and twisted metal
Were no match against their powers.

Pushed beyond limits of endurance
They would go to any length
Dedication to their mission
Was not their only source of strength.

Man and dog working together
To find just one life to save,
Man and dog working together
Unselfish, relentless and brave.

Through scorching heat and pouring rain
They refused to stop and rest.
To find just one beating heart
They gave their all, their best.

Working tirelessly side by side
Working together until the end,
A partnership of love and respect
Man and his best friend.

They couldn't find the beating hearts
Hearts once filled with life and love,
The beating hearts they sought to find
Were now with God above.

Listen to the silence

Listen to the silence
That replaced the awful roar,
Listen for the beating hearts
That beat no more.

Look into the eyes of a nation,
Not believing what they see;
Voices cry out in unison,
"Dear Lord, this just can't be!"

Look into the hearts of those
Who can only sit and wait,
Mother, fathers, husbands, wives
Fearing their loved ones fate.

Children asking moms and dads,
"Will I die today?"
As they struggle for the answers,
Families kneel to pray.

Flags flying at half-staff,
Flags flying in front of homes,
Flags flying for freedom
When it seems all hope is gone.

The new leader of our nation
Struggles for words to say;
This loving, caring leader
Now leads us as we pray.

The honorable mayor of New York City,
A city he has loved for many years,
Lost friends and more but begs us all
To put to rest our fears.

Men who told us jokes late at night
Are also asking why;
Men who filled our hearts with laughter
Now join us as we cry.

We're a nation of strong people
Who can love and carry on;
We have to show these hateful men
That this battle we have won.

Hear our Prayers

Dear God, we need some answers,
Why do men do evil things?
Evil men with hearts filled with hate,
Surely know the pain it brings.

God, please help us understand
Did You allow these men to kill?
Help us to make some sense of this,
Help our hearts and souls to heal.

Some turn to faith to help them,
Others question, "Why?"
How could a truly loving God
Let so many people die?

They're calling this a "Holy War"
But what's so Holy about it?
Holy is goodness, love and faith
My world can't live without it.

Can even You, with all Your love,
Forgive them for what they do?
Some pray to someday understand;
Others have lost faith in You.

If forgiveness is what's needed,
Don't ask us to forgive these awful men.
Please forgive us instead for losing faith,
And help our broken hearts to mend.

No More

Towers that soared so high above us,
They are no more!

A building filled with brave souls to defend the rest of us,
It is the same no more!

Planes filled with people who had hopes and dreams,
They are no more!

Loving fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, children,
They are no more!

America cried out with all the world,
"Enough! No more!"
